I’ve been on quite the blogging hiatus after my initial post, so it’s time to get this thing cranked up again.
The life as a Vanderbilt admissions counselor has been quite eventful in the past month, so I’ll try to catch you up in my next few posts. Though the fall travel season means more time in the Hampton Inn than in Nashville, I did manage to sleep in my own bed last weekend as Vanderbilt celebrated Homecoming with a big game against the University of Georgia. Of course, I have particular interest in this game as I’m a Georgia native and both my parents graduated from UGA. Not to mention that we wrecked their homecoming last year in what may have been one of the most awkward athletic event endings I’ve ever experienced. After a 24-22 Commodore win, the 80,000ish fans wearing red and black in UGA’s Sanford Stadium stood in complete silence. Decked in black and gold, I quietly slipped out of the stadium to avoid any confrontation with the stunned Dawg fans. A glorious moment as a Commodore, though, I must say. So, I arrived to "Vandyville" (tailgating area) on Saturday with much hope of continuing a two-year winning streak. We all know what happened. The ‘Dores almost pulled off the win if it wasn’t for a last minute fumble on our part and field goal on their part to win 17-20. Tragic. I sat in the stands for a good 20 minutes post-game just waiting for overtime to begin. It's truly heartbreaking when you snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory.
Nonetheless, the loss did little to affect the spirit of campus... Black and gold, alumni celebrating 5th to 55th reunions, the Spirit of Gold, festive brunch, tailgaiting, and a general camaraderie among Vanderbilt fans far outweighed our pigskin defeat. It's always good to be reminded of what (partly) drives my representing Vanderbilt as an Admissions Counselor. The community here is just a good place to call home.
